Estar con los muertos

La filosofía, afirmó Sócrates, es el arte de morir. El entierro, con sus rituales, es la práctica cultural-simbólica documentada más antigua: todos los humanos han desarrollado técnicas para cuidar y relacionarse con los muertos. La premisa de Hans Ruin en esta obra es que podemos explorar nuestras vidas con los muertos como un a priori existencial transcultural del que emergen las formas básicas de la conciencia histórica. El cuidado de los muertos no solo es el manejo simbólico de los restos mortales, también apunta a un espacio político en el que el vínculo entre los muertos y los vivos mantiene unidas a las sociedades. No existe un ámbito social totalmente ajeno al compartido con los muertos. Aprender a vivir es aprender a habitar en este espacio de forma responsable. A través de un análisis interdisciplinar que combina filosofía e historia cultural y social, el autor nos acerca al fenómeno de la muerte y su importancia como hecho cultural transversal a todos los seres humanos.

Philosophy, Socrates asserted, is the art of dying. Burial, with its rituals, is the oldest documented cultural-symbolic practice: all humans have developed techniques for caring for and relating to the dead. Hans Ruin's premise in this work is that we can explore our lives with the dead as a transcultural existential a priori from which the basic forms of historical consciousness emerge. Caring for the dead is not only the symbolic handling of mortal remains; it also points to a political space in which the bond between the dead and the living holds societies together. There is no social sphere entirely separate from that shared with the dead. Learning to live is learning to inhabit this space responsibly. Through an interdisciplinary analysis that combines philosophy and cultural and social history, the author brings us closer to the phenomenon of death and its importance as a cultural fact that affects all human beings.
